The war is as fierce today as it ever was. It is a battle for culture and identity and it is the same war the Maccabees fought oh so long ago. While the original Hanukkah victory had a military component, the battle was certainly first and foremost a fight against cultural assimilation – and that struggle continues today.

Exhibit A: Matisyahu. I am not about to rip on one of my all time favorite musicians, but it was painful for me and many others to see our beloved Hassidic Reggae Superstar look no different then Sting. Matisyahu’s music was amazing, and hopefully will continue to be amazing, but before he was so, well, outwardly Jewish, so proudly different. You just respected him so much for not caring what the world thought. In his full beard he felt tribal, rebellious, revolutionary. But now, it’s all gone and now the beard-of-belonging and Hassidic look is being portrayed as some ball and chain, some iron mask to be freed of.

In Latin there is a saying: The name is an omen. Matisyahu’s very name comes from Hanukkah and in his inner struggle to find his real self the battle of Hanukkah was taking place – the battle to place oneself somewhere on the spectrum between Hellenist (totally assimilated) and Zealot (no outside influence). The signs of identity-strain already showed themselves when for last year’s Holiday Season, Matis released a brilliant and inspiring song “Miracle” – but in the video Matis is seen dancing around in a bird cage dressed in a Santa outfit.

You ask yourself: What is authentic Jewish music? Is it reggae? What is the authentic Jewish look? Black hat? Who inspires you more: the Lubavitcher Rebbe or Bob Marley? Are you a Giants fan or a Jewish soldier? And can these contradictions co-exist, or do we lie to ourselves to justify our comfort zones?

Having religious angst is one thing, but why did Matisyahu feel the need to share his shave with the world? Why did it have to go out to millions by Twitter? Maybe he did not want to shock his fans next time he came out on stage. Or maybe by taking a new side in the cultural battle, Matisyahu chose to be a cultural combatant once again. Matis used to make Judaism look awesome, but now he made it look like a prison. A bit sad, but I still love you Matis, and looking forward to your comeback!

Exhibit B: Yeshiva University scandal involving a column about a student’s premarital sexual episode, ending with her “walk of shame.” YU, an Orthodox Jewish university, wanted the paper to get rid of the column. The paper stood its ground and preferred to lose its funding.

This too happened right before Hanukkah , and is part of the classic cultural war where sexuality, which no doubt existed at YU before, feels the need to be outed, to be loud and proud – to be… Greek. Just like the wars that raged in Judea 2,000 years ago, today’s Jewish students on campus struggle between the passions of physicality and the values of timeless Judaism. The bastion of American Jewish education, Yeshiva University, is indeed a battleground where the forces of Hellenism and traditionalism are locked in a competition for cultural supremacy.

Exhibit C: Absorption Ministry ads targeting Israelis living in America and calling them back to the Jewish State. In one of the ads, Israeli grandparents Skyping with their granddaughter who is living in America are shocked to learn that she is more aware of Christmas then Hanukkah . Unlike the first two exhibits where forces of cultural leniency struck against classical values, here the State of Israel struck back with an unequivocal Maccabean message: American culture is inferior to Jewish culture, so come back home before you lose your children to assimilation.

Many American Jews were outraged, feeling personally affronted at having their host culture besmirched. While Matisyahu paraded his new clean face, and the YU girl lamented her walk of shame, the State of Israel pushed an alternative to Christmas and offered Hanukkah as a remedy for the disease of assimilation.

Exhibit D: While in Exhibit C the State of Israel was the Maccabee, in Exhibit D the Jewish State took its own walk of shame: “The Ministry of Culture and Sport is sponsoring Hanukkah happenings throughout the country under the banner ‘Nes Hanukkah (Hanukkah Miracle)’. In order to make more cultural options available to all, a new initiative is being undertaken to make 100 plays in more than 100 locations free for children. The plays will include Pippi Longstocking, Pinocchio, Aladdin, and more.”

Excuse me? What were those plays again? Did you say Pippi Longstocking? Was she from the house of Chashmonai? If we’re going to go to the trouble of making a whole series of Hanukkah happenings, shouldn’t we use this opportunity to educate about our own cultural history, to teach Jewish identity?

My daughter loves Fiddler on the Roof – why not put that on? My favorite all-time movie is “Masada” with Peter O’Toole; why not make that into a play? Can’t we promote our own stories, our own heroes? Or are we too afraid of those cultural icons of the past because their story is too demanding for us? Those Maccabees were pretty serious folks, they sought purity and Temple offerings, and I guess not everyone in the Israeli elite is interested in inculcating Maccabee ideology…

And speaking of Masada, my friend Yehuda HaKohen pointed out that a McDonald’s is opening up at the famous desert palace/fortress. McDonald’s, not exactly a traditional Jewish food establishment, is rather the height of modern American soft-power cultural imperialism. Putting a McDonald’s at Masada offends the memory of the Zealot fighters who fled the Roman occupation army in search of cultural and religious independence. So why not put a nice Israeli restaurant there instead, something that feels authentically Jewish? But then again, what is authentic Jewish food – Shawarma? Gefilte fish? Jachnoon? Petcha? We’re still figuring that one out.

Finally, Exhibit E in the battle for Jewish identity: Who else but the Maccabeats! They make me “believe in miracles”! These young men make fun music, but as their name suggests, they are cultural warriors. They took Matisyahu’s song “Miracle”, sang it a cappella style, and added to it a video that warms the Jewish heart, giving us Nachas. No walk of shame, no Santa outfits, just great energy and a love of Judaism. And if Hanukkah is about broadcasting the miracle, Pirsumei Nisa, then the Maccabeats usage of YouTube to spread the light of Hanukkah and make Judaism look attractive is to be lauded. Thanks boys, you give me back my faith in the victory of true Jewish culture over the forces of assimilation. Keep it up!

For Jews, assimilating out is easy – but the real challenge is to assimilate in, to process the 3,500 years of Jewish history, knowledge, and texts, and to somehow find a way to be modern, creative, and free, yet still in line with Jewish tradition. Being proudly Jewish and cleaving to our authentic spirit is real beauty. Never surrender.

חמס. לא מילה נאה. יש לה קונוטציות של גזל, אלימות, כעס. בפרשת נח מסופר שהעולם התמלא בחמס: “ותמלא הארץ חמס” ועל כן בקש הקב”ה להשחית את כל העולם.

הבעל הטורים מודיע לנו שהלשון הזה של “ותמלא הארץ” מופיע רק עוד פעם אחת בכל התורה. הפעם לא לגבי חמס אלא להפך – לגבי עם ישראל: “ותמלא הארץ אותם” – בתקופה של שעיבוד מצריים עם ישראל מילא את הארץ על ידי ילודה רבה.

מה הקשר? מסביר הבעל הטורים: בשני המקומות הארץ עצמה התמלאה פיזית. אצל אנשי המבול הארץ עצמה – הקרקע – הייתה מלאה בחמס. כיצד? אדם היה מפקיד חפצים לשמירה ביד חברו, ועימם שמן אפרסמון, השומר היה מטמין את החפצים בקרקע, עם שאר אוצרותיו. המפקיד היה בא ליטול את ממונו והיה עוקב אחרי הריח כדי לגלות ולגנוב את אוצרותיו של חברו. על ידי זה התקיים הפסוק “ותמלא הארץ חמס” – שבטוח מחולות הארץ עצמה התגשם העניין של חמס, דהיינו, גנבה ובצע.

לאומת זאת, במצריים, תחת רדיפה ושעת שמד נוראית, נשי ישראל הצליחו להוליד ילדים רבים (ששה בכרס אחד) ולהחביא אותם בארץ. בלשון בעל הטורים, התינוקות “היו נבלעים תחת הקרקע ואחר כך מבצבצים ועולים”. ובכך גם פה התקיים הפסוק “ותמלא הארץ” בצורה מילולית.

נו, אז מה? מה הקשר בין שני הענינים הללו? מה יש ללמוד מההתמנות השונות, האחד של חמס והשני של אמהות ישראל?

בעולם שלנו יש שני כוחות שנלחמים בעד השני: החמס (הרע) ועם ישראל (הטוב) והמלחמה היא על שליטה מלאה בארץ. אבל מי שמבקש לשלוט בארץ חייב שורשים עמוקים מתחת לארץ. זו הסיבה שאנו אומרים לגבי ה’ ש”הוא האלקים בשמים ממעל ועל הארץ מתחת”. כדי לשלוט בארץ ולהנחיל רעיון כלשהו צריך שליטה שורשית, דהיינו, אם בסיס מתחת לארץ.

והנה, אנו רואים שה”חמס” של היום זה לא רק מילה מופשטת המסמלת את הרוע, אלה הרעיון של חמס כרם גידים ולבש בגדים והופיע בהתגלמות פיזית וקרא לעצמו שם ללא התעייה ובלבול – הלא הוא ה”חמס” – כנופית הטרור הג’הדית השולטת בעזה.

והחמס של היום עושה היום משעשה בימי נח – מנסה להשתלט על הקרקע על ידי שיטת “ותמלא הארץ”, שליטה אפילו מתחת לארץ. ראו את כל המחולות הטת-קרקעיות בעזה המלאות נשק והספקה וכמובן טילים הממתינים לשימוש נגד ישראל. ויותר מזה, באחד מן המחולות הטת-קרקעיות האלו, החמס הצליחו להחזיק בחייל ישראלי חטוף למעלה מחמש שנים.

ומה שמו של החייל החטוף? שליט! המלחמה פה היא על מי ישלוט בארץ! חמס מבקשים לשלוט ועל כן הם חטפו את “שליט” לומר לנו “אנו נשלוט”. ואכן, ישראל איבדה את שליטתה בעזה ובעצם העבירה את השליטה לידי החמס השולטים “על הארץ” ו”מתחת”.

מה אמורה להיות תשובותינו? איך אנו נלחמים בכוחות הרשע של החמס? לנו גם יש כח של “ותמלא הארץ” – והוא על ידי הילדים. יש ללמוד מדור עבדות מצרים שחייבים להטמין את הילדים בקרקע, כמו שהזכרנו: “היו נבלעים תחת הקרקע ואחר כך מבצבצים ועולים”.

הכוונה היא שהיום שאנו חייבים לגדל ולחנך דור חדש הספוג באהבת הארץ ומקושר לקרקע עד כדי כך שלא יעלה על דעתו להיכנע “להחזיר שטחים” ולוותר על נחלתו.

ויתר על כך: עלינו לחסל את מחולות הרשע של החמס, להוקיע אותם ממקומות המסתור שלהם, ובמקומם לנטוע שורשים עמוקים מתחת לקרקע – שרשים של פרות, ירקות, ופרחים (וכך היה בגוש קטיף, וכך יהיה שוב), שרשים של בנינים, היינו, יסודות בנין של גני ילדים ובתי ספר לנעור העברי.

עלינו להבין שאין יכולת להגיע למשה ומתן והסכמים אם החמס כי רצונם הוא “רק רע כל היום”. וגם אין יכולת להעניש אותם או ללמד אותם לקח. העניין פה הוא שרשי, ואם לא להוציא את השרש אז שוב הרוע יצמח ושוב “ותמלא הארץ חמס”. רק תיפול שרש המוקיע את שליטת החמס יועיל. ובמקום מחולות טילי הרשע של עזה שוב נבנה שם בתים, ניטה כרמים, “ותמלא הארץ אותם” – ילדי ישראל ישירו ויקדמו פניו של השלום והמשיח.

בפרשה שעברה שמענו דברים קשים שלצערנו אנו מכירים על בשרנו:

“הגר אשר בקרבך יעלה עליך מעלה מעלה ואתה תרד מטה מטה.”

הלא מצב זה מוכר לנו היטב. אחרי מלחמת ששת ימים כל העולם העריך את ישראל, את הגבורה של הצבא העברי, ויתר מזה, את ההשגחה העצומה והגילוי הנורא של אותו מלך אחד ויחיד שהבטיח להחזיר את עמו אל ארץ אבותיו וקיים בגדול.

אבל אחרי המלחמה, אנו הססנו לישב, ליהד, ולפרוס את ריבונותנו על חבלי הארץ המשוחררים. דווקא אחרי הנצחון הניסי אנו גילינו פחד. למה? כי פחדנו מהשמעות העמוקה של הדברים שראינו. אילו באמת יש אלוקים בשמים, והוא אכן עושה ניסים הנגלים לעין, אז כנראה אני חייב להכיר אותו, אולי אפילו להיות ממושמע לתורתו. המפגש הזה, בין האיש הישראלי ובין בורא העולם זה דבר מפחיד מאוד ומאתגר. בעצם, אם אתה פוגש את האלוקים, אתה חייב לשנות את את אורח החיים שלך, והפוטנציאל לחזור בתשובה ולהשתנות הוא מפחיד.

לכן, אחרי הגילוי העצום של ששת הימים אנו, כעם, טרחנו לכסות את הנגלה, להחזיר את הר הבית לגויים (שמחללים שם שמים בכל יום), ונתנו רשות לעם אחר המחזר אחרי אדמתינו לתפוס את מקומינו הנערץ בכלי התיקשורת ובעיני העולם. וכתוצאה, הנרטיב הפלסטיני היום מושך את לב העולם, והנרטיב שלנו דועך ודועך.

“הגר אשר בקרבך יעלה עליך מעלה מעלה ואתה תרד מטה מטה.”

ועוד, הפלסטינאים הפכו לראש כל מהלך, ואנו יודעים רק להגיב להם ולא יודעים ליזום ולהוביל מהלך חדש – כמו שאנו רואים השבוע באו”ם. “הוא יהיה לראש ואתה תהיה לזנב.”

אכן, קללת התורה מתקיימת בנו. אבל ה’ רחום כל כך! אפילו הקללה הזאת היא ברכה, כי שוב אנו רואים כמה אמיתית התורה וכמה עצותיה נבונות ומתאימות למצב שלנו. עלינו רק להבין ולקבל שהתורה הינה השכל האולטימטיבי, ושכל הדיבורים החכמים של שני מדינות לשני עמים וכדומה, אין להם כל קיום, אלא רק הרס ונסיגה.

השכל היהודי הוא לא השכל האישי שלנו, אלא השכל שנטע בנו הקב”ה להבין את תורתו. עלינו לא לפחד מהפוטנציאל הטמון בנו לחזור בתשובה וללכת בדרכו, כי רק על ידי התגברותנו על היצר שמנסה להסיט אותנו נגיע לארץ המובטחת ברוחניות ובגשמיות ממש ואז יתקיים בנו הכתוב: “וקראו להם עם הקודש גאולי יהוה ולך יקרא דרושה עיר לא נעזבה.”

יש ברכות ויש קללות. אחרי השואה היה אדמו”ר שבקש מהבעל קורא שלו להקריא את הקללות שנמצאות בפרשתנו דווקא בקול רם – למה? – כי כבר עברנו את הקללות הכי קשות שכתובות בתורה, טען אותו אדמו”ר, ועכשיו אנו כבר בצד השני של אותו חזון נורא.

מצד אחד, באמת עברנו את הקשה מכל, השואה, וכיום רוב העם חי בארצו, מדבר בלשון הקודש, ואפילו זוכה לשגשוג כלכלי ב”ה. מצד שני, רק לפני חודש נרצחו שמונה יהודים בדרום הארץ, ומי יכול לשכוח את האכזריות שפקדה את איתמר לפני חצי שנה. אי אפשר לומר שהקללות הכתובות בתורה אינן פוגועת בנו כלל. לאותם נרצחים אין הבדל בין רוע השואה והרוע שפגש אותם. בכל דור ודור אויבינו קמים להרוג ולהשמיד את עם ה’.

אז השאלה היא: האם אנחנו אחרי כל הקללות או עוד בתוכם, האם אנחנו נשארנו בגלות או כבר בתהליך גאולה? התשובה היא שהכל, כרגיל, תלוי בזוית ראיה, או בלשון הגויים, פרספקטיבה. חז”ל כבר לימדו אותנו: מי העשיר? השמח בחלקו! עושר זה לא דבר אוביקטיבי, אלא סוביקטיבי. אם אתה מרגיש עשיר, אז אתה באמת עשיר, ואם אתה מרגיש מסכן אז תמיד תהיה מסכן.

אותו דבר לגבי הגאולה: אם אדם מסתכל מסביבו ורואה את הגאולה, אף אחד לא ישכנע אותו שהוא בגלות, ואם אדם משוכנע שהוא בגלות, אף אחד לא יצליח להוציא את הראש שלו משם.

תמיד צריך לדעת להיות חיובי. אפילו כשיש כאב וחיסרון עלינו לראות את כל השפע וכל הברכות הבאות עלינו כל יום. ה’ הוא המוציא אותנו מכל צרה ומביא אותנו למקום בטוח, כמו שכתוב: “ויוציאנו יהוה ממצרים ביד חזקה ובזרע נטויה ובמורא גדל ובאותות ובמפתים׃ ויביאנו אל המקום הזה ויתן לנו את הארץ הזאת ארץ זבת חלב ודבש.”

אם בעקשנות נבקש את הגלות, ללא ספק נמצא גם אותה, כי היא גם קיימת: “ובאו עליך כל הקללות האלה והשיגוך.”

אבל אם אנו נחליט שאנו כבר בגאולה ונתחיל לחפש את סימניה, מיד נראה את כל הטוב והעושר שמסביבינו, ונתחיל לפעול כבני גאולה. ואז נזכה לאמר: “שמעתי בקול יהוה אלהי עשיתי ככל אשר צויתני׃ השקיפה ממעון קדשך מן השמים וברך את עמך את ישראל ואת האדמה אשר נתת לנו כאשר נשבעת לאבתינו ארץ זבת חלב ודבש.”

ועוד, אחרי שהגענו להסתכלות חיובית על המצב, עלינו לבקש עוד גאולה ולא להסתפק בגאולה מעוטה. יש בפרשתינו הרבה מצוות שאנו עדיין לא מקיימים כמו ביכורים, תרומות ומעשרות, ואפילו ענין של אבני התורה המעידים על החוקה האמיתית של עם ישראל. אסור לנו לעמוד במקום ועלינו להאיץ קדימה ולדרוש גאולה שלימה. אנו שמחים בחלקינו, אבל לא נסתפק עד שתחזינה עינינו בעם שלם, עם לב שלם, שמח בבנין שלם.

Earlier this evening, the brit milah of Yishai and Malkah Fleisher’s second child, Elazer Menachem, took place in their apartment in Maale HaZeitim, overlooking the Temple Mount. The brief ceremony that initiated the baby into the covenant of Abraham closed circles for several of the people who crammed into the Fleisher’s home to celebrate the occasion.

Yishai was born in Israel to a family who had managed to escape Leningrad in the 1970s, a few short years before his birth. The Fleishers, like many Russian Jews, were intellectuals whose Jewish identity had been rekindled by the Six-Day War. I met many families like the Fleishers when I traveled to the former Soviet Union in 1974, 1986 and 1989.

The Fleishers were amongst the fortunate ones who arbitrarily received visas for Israel after losing jobs and waiting for years to get out. Following several years of economic struggle in Israel, the family made the difficult decision to leave for the US, where Yishai and his brother and sister grew up.

Yishai is fluent in Russian, Hebrew and English, as is his mother, who in Hebrew addressed those who came to celebrate the brit, as she held her tiny new-born sabra grandson in her arms. In a voice filled with emotion, she marveled at the fact that after all her family’s wanderings, she was holding the second generation of sabras in her family. “At this special moment, we can’t forget all those whom we left behind in the forests of Ukraine; in the fields around Leningrad and in the trenches of Russia,” she said. “My grandson will never know such wanderings–he’s at home here in Jerusalem,” she whispered.

Yishai explained his son’s name. Both his late father and Malka’s father are named Alexander. After consulting their rabbi, the couple decided to incorporate the first two letters of Alexander–the alef and lamed and the last letter, resh–to form a new name for their son based on that of his grandfathers.

As Yishai spoke in Hebrew about his feelings on this momentous occasion in the life of his family, I thought back to when we first met and of our many encounters since.

For about seven years before I made aliya in 1998, I ran the Coalition for Jewish Concerns-Amcha together with its president and founder, Rabbi Avi Weiss. We worked hard to build a grass-roots Jewish activist movement that was mobilized to address all kinds of issues confronting the Jewish community back then. Needless to say, students were the backbone of CJC-Amcha, and Rav Avi spent a good chunk of his time traveling to campuses to inspire Jewish students while I tried to build coalitions with existing student groups and promising Jewish students.

Two of the most personable and committed Jewish students in the New York area were Yishai Fleisher and his friend Ezra Halevi. Radiating intelligence and Jewish pride, Ezra and Yishai were fully committed Zionists who were biding their time and completing their education before heading off to new lives in Israel. In the meantime, they could always be counted on to show up at every demonstration on behalf of Jews in danger, usually bringing with them a cadre of their fellow students.

It wasn’t too many years after my own aliya that I ran into Ezra and Yishai in the Old City one night. Both young men already seemed totally at home in Israel and talked optimistically about their plans.

Yishai had come back to Israel at age 17 to serve in the paratroopers. While earning an undergraduate degree and attending Cardozo Law School where he met an idealistic fellow student named Malkah, Yishai and his friends formed Kumah, the aliyah revolution movement. They set the example, made aliya themselves and encouraged scores of their friends to join them.

Yishai started a new career as a broadcaster and quickly rose to become news director of Israel National Radio, based in Beit El, where the Fleishers moved. Through their dynamism, charisma and knowledgeable commentary, he and Malkah, who also gave up law for broadcasting, built a large following and have appeared on major media outlets speaking on every aspect of Israeli life.

Earlier this year, the Fleishers moved to Maale Hazeitim, the new Jewish neighborhood overlooking the Temple Mount at the edge of the Mt of Olives cemetery. Starting in 1998, under the banner of the Yerushalayim Shelanu movement, I was one of a team of people that brought people to the corner of the Ras El Amud neighborhood, where we would clamber up on the roof of an abandoned Arab building and look down at the huge empty lot to the south. We would tell people about the history of that piece of property and explain the plans for a new Jewish neighborhood to be built there once all the plans had been approved and the vociferous international opposition had died down. Many of the visitors looked at us as if we were completely crazy.

Over the years, we continued to bring people to witness the completion of each phase of the project and now dozens of families like the Fleishers and hundreds of kids are living in the modern, attractive complex. Chaim Silberstein, one of the key movers in the campaign to promote Jewish population in all parts of Jerusalem and a friend of the Fleishers from Beit El, joined in the simcha of the brit.

But this time, as I pointed out to Chaim, we were standing not on a broken down rooftop but in a beautiful finished apartment occupied by a flourishing Jewish family, overlooking a sight generations of Jews have dreamed of. The circles close.
