KUMAH, which is Hebrew for ARISE, is an organization dedicated to encouraging and facilitating mass Aliyah to Israel by all Jews of the exile. KUMAH believes that the time is ripe for Neo-Zionism, a Biblical dream being realized today. Through an array of projects, KUMAH seeks to invigorate the Jews of the Diaspora with a new vision of Israel and innovative plans for Aliyah. We at KUMAH believe that the G-dly destiny of the Jewish people is waiting to be fulfilled in Israel right now!
But what is Neo-Zionism? What's so "Neo"about it? How does it apply to me? Letís take a look:
Zionism derives its strength from the clear mandate of history. Sixty years ago, the Nazis attempted to obliterate any remnant of Judaism. This event was to be the culmination of two thousand years of Jewish exile and persecution. But the will of evil men did not prevail, and their vision did not come to fruition. Instead, from the ashes of the Holocaust, the miracle of Israel was born!
Yet, not all Jews were able or willing to immigrate to Israel after the Holocaust. Some were trapped behind the Russian Iron Curtain. Some were stuck in Moslem lands. Another group came to America, the "guldene medineh." In the 40's, 50's and 60's Jews from Moslem countries were expelled and in the early 70's the Jews of Russia were freed. Upon release, millions of them immigrated to Israel.
Now only two great camps remain in the Jewish world: American Jewry and Israeli Jewry. Divided by thousands of miles of ocean, our charge is to unite.
The new light of Zionism and Jewish reunification has begun to shine bright. Now, we Jews are like infants born into a new world. Our charge is to open our eyes and see the light. As it is written in the in blessings of the Shema: "May You shine a new light on Zion, and may we all speedily merit its light."
A new song is being sung by the house of Israel: Neo-Zionism.
Neo-Zionism is based upon authentic Jewish spiritual underpinnings which view Israel as the natural and G-d given home of the Jewish people. The future of Israel is not only about creating a defensive haven for Jews; rather, it is about the triumphant and noble future of the people of Israel in the Land of Israel.
Neo-Zionism is a direct attack on Post-Zionism. Post-Zionism a subversive anti-ideology, claiming that the monumental project of building a Jewish country and unifying all Jews within its borders, has peaked and is now on the decline. While post-Zionism means that the Zionist project is over, Neo-Zionism proclaims a renewal of the Zionist spirit to build and be built in Israel.
Neo-Zionism is post-cynical. In contrast to the negative, infighting atmosphere of world-Jewry today, Neo-Zionism is positive and full of faith. Despite the hardships that face Israel today, we are part of something bigger, and we're not going to be dissuaded by bumps in the road.
Neo-Zionism is a latent energy in the Jewish people. Once unleashed, its power will be unstoppable. Our manifest destiny has been patient, but now its glory boils within us and moves us to song, as is written in the Sabbath liturgy: "The Temple will be rebuilt, the city of Zion will be filled. And there we will sing a new song, and we will arise in Joy."
We Jews have been the catalysts of progress throughout the ages. We are history-makers and now we are being called upon once again to innovate. We must translate the Neo-Zionist ideal into a practical vision and a plan of action. For starters, North American Jewry must move physically and spiritually back to Israel. The return of American Jewry to Israel will strengthen the economy, weaken our enemies, and create a society which is a "light unto the nations".
This is not a pipe dream; it has already begun. Many American Jews have already moved to Israel and are visible and vocal. They have established beautiful cities such as Efrat, Raanana, and Maalot Dafna.
The mission of Diaspora Jewry is clear. Our historical calling is to inherit the Land of the Covenant, the land of Abraham, our birthright, our home. There, G-d will embrace us and bless us, as it is written: "A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you; and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to follow my statutes, and you shall keep my judgments, and do them. And you shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers; and you shall be my people, and I will be your G-d." (Ezekiel 36:26-28)
