A Non-Kosher Way to Think...

This past week, Israeli (Russian) billionaire businessman, Arkadi Gaydamak, bought the Tiv Ta'am supermarket chain, which, until now, was one of the largest suppliers of pork products in Israel.

Gadamak has declared his intent to make the Tiv Ta'am supermarket chain kosher, dramatically reducing the number of places selling pork product in Israel.

So far so good.

Things get a bit complicated, however, when Gaydamak explains his reasoning for turning Tiv Ta'am kosher.
"I believe that in a Jewish state, in which there is a large Muslim minority, selling pork is a provocation."
If Israel is a Jewish State, then why does it matter how large or small the Muslim population is?

Simply put, what Gaydamak should have said was:

"I believe that in a Jewish State, selling pork is a provocation."

A provocation towards Jews!

If any animal serves as the symbol of all that is non-kosher and anti-Judaism, it is the pig.

However, there is an additional reason why we should be troubled by Gaydamak's remarks. Namely, his remarks serve as an indictment against the Jewish People.

Gaydamak knows that Muslims won't accept pork being sold in their community - and he is not interested in offending their sensibilities, as is made clear by his statement.

Gaydamak doesn't seem to be overly concerned of offending the majority of Jews living in the Jewish State of Israel, and that reflects shamefully both upon Gaydamak and all Jews who call the Jewish State home.

I don't think he meant it like that - first of all. That was just what Ynet or whoever chose to clip from his statement. I think he meant the Muslim thing as a response to the left, who are much more sensitive to the sensibilities of the other children of Abraham.

From all his actions to date, I don't see our camp's rush to claim this man is anything but the GaydaMACK Daddy. When he does something bad, we should call him on it - until then - why?

Oh no! Not another picture of a pig... Remember what happened the last time someone posted one? Ze'ev, if the server goes down again...

pro-Ze'ev: Gaydamak also said he would bring Arab players into Beitar Yerushalayim and he also bought and aided Bani Sakhnin (which didn't prevent the Sakhninites from rioting when Beitar came to play there). He seems to have this notion that he can make peace between the natives.

anti-Ze'ev: I'm not sure there's anything wrong with mentioning the Muslims, he's a businessman, I imagine he's thinking of opening some shops in Arab towns as well. Unless we are into boycotting the Arab populace and denying them Israeli goods, in which case a case for a boycott needs to be made.

Pinchas - true, but this is a dead and skewered pig.

On the other hand - dead and skewered is how people who eat pigs like them, isn't it. Oh well.

Ok, Ok... I'm glad that my post has already caused so much discussion.

    In response:

    1) Pro-Gil: Gaydamak, in addition to the examples you mention, has also endorsed Jewish-arab co-existence programs (

    2) Anti-Gil: I don't doubt that he is driven by business considerations - but that only strengthens my point. After all, 80% of the country is Jewish - as such, if he should be worried about offending anyone - it should be the Jews!

The question is, Pinchas, why it should offend Jews that he is also thinking about the Arabs. Or maybe I don't understand what you are saying. Because after all the same thing which offends the Jews in this case also offends the Muslims.

    I meant Ze'ev!

Ze'ev, I honestly think there is a simple grammatical error here. I think what Arkady meant was "I believe that in a Jewish state, (in which, additionally, there is a large Muslim minority) selling pork is a provocation." I think he meant to say that all constituencies in Israel find pork to be objectionable, and therefore it should be stopped.

maybe we should paint the pig green?

    Yishai is right.
There was a translation mistake. Here is an original text in Hebrew from Ynet,7340,L-3411718,00.html

Whatever. You guys may be right - but, as far as I see things, how many posts here have generated double digit comments like this one did?!?

"I got the impression that Gaydamak is driven by true concern – he wants to take pork out (of the markets) and allow Israelis to eat kosher foods.

"He told me he's driven by the fact that millions of Jews throughout history have been murdered because they insisted on keeping kosher and not eating pork"

So he removes a type of food from the supermarket which you don't want there. You should be happy. But instead you're angry because he's considering the sensibilities of muslims?

Ok. I guess anyone who thinks about the sensibilities of muslims in Israel is a scumbag now. I see where you're headed with this. Sounds like you've been living in Israel a few days too long.

My grandpa in the south would get upset every time a soul food section opened up in the grocery store, too. Like you, he was always angry at people for "appeasing the niggers".

You need to get off the plantation, and get to a real civilization my friend.
